How do Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) use the BMAT?
The BMAT is scored out of 37, there are 9 marks for section 1, 18 marks for section 2 and 5 marks for each element of section 3. Applicants are ranked according to their total score of 37 and chosen for interviews working down the rankings.
BMAT scores must fulfil all of the following:
Section one: a score of at least 3 or higher
Section two: a score of at least 6 or higher
Section three: a score of at least 2.5C or higher
Be wary of previous data! In previous admissions cycles, BSMS scored the BMAT out of 28, and the cut-off scores for interviews were:
Home applicants: 17.8 or above overall
Home applicants with contextual data: 16.4 or above overall
International: 18.8 or above overall
How does Imperial College London use the BMAT?
Imperial uses your BMAT score in addition to the other aspects of your application. There are cut-off scores that change every year.
For 2021 the cut-offs were as follows:
Section 1 & 2: 3.5 minimum in either section and a minimum combined score of 10.9
Section 3: 2.5C minimum
How does Lancaster University use the BMAT?
Applicants are ranked according to their BMAT scores. The sum of the scores for sections 1-3 is used. Top-ranking applicants are offered an interview.
How Does University College London (UCL) use the BMAT?
BMAT scores are used alongside other aspects of the application. UCL have no cut-off scores.

How does the University of Cambridge use the BMAT?
BMAT scores are used alongside other aspects of the application. The University of Cambridge has no cut-off scores.
How does the University of Leeds use the BMAT?
BMAT scores are used alongside academic criteria and past and predicted grades. Applicants are ranked and they expect to invite 750 candidates to interview.
How does the University of Oxford use the BMAT?
BMAT scores are used alongside other aspects of the application for shortlisting. The University of Oxford has no cut-off scores.
Weightings for each section are not equal. In 2021 weightings were section 1=40%, section 2=40%, section 3=20%. Double weight is ascribed to the quality of the content score and single weight to the quality of English score in section 3
